Kasteyev Museum in Almaty: what to see with a child and what to draw afterwards
Kasteyev Museum in Almaty works well as a weekend route: an hour and a half inside, and at home the child suddenly has something to draw. In order: who Kasteyev was, what to look for in the halls, how long a child actually lasts, and which three exercises to give afterwards.
Who Abylkhan Kasteyev was
Abylkhan Kasteyev lived from 1904 to 1973 and was born in the village of Chizhin in the Zhetysu region. He did not begin at an academy: his first teacher was Nikolai Khludov, an Almaty painter working in a realist manner. Only in 1934 did Kasteyev enter the Krupskaya evening art studio in Moscow, where he studied for three years.

He worked in watercolour and in oil, painting landscapes, portraits, everyday scenes and historical subjects. He left over a thousand works and was named People's Artist of the Kazakh SSR. The country's main art museum carries his name.
For a child learning to draw, one thing in that biography matters: the man started with lessons from a working painter rather than with a diploma. The road from first sheets to a museum took years of work, not a flash of talent.
What to look for in the halls
The museum holds more than twenty thousand items, and not all of it is Kazakh art: there are halls of decorative and foreign art as well. Seeing everything in one visit is impossible, and it is not the point.
What works best with a child:
- mountains and sky. Ask which of the two takes up more of the picture. A child starts seeing proportion long before learning the word "composition"
- the lightest patch. Find it together, then check where the eye travels next
- the hands of people in everyday scenes. What are they doing: holding, carrying, pointing. This trains reading a subject
- the size of the canvas. Walk up and compare the height of the painting with the child's own height
- watercolour next to oil. Step close to both: in watercolour the paper shows through, in oil you can see the ridge of the brushstroke
How long a child lasts
The usual mistake on a museum trip with children is walking every hall. After forty minutes attention runs out, and what follows is no longer a museum but fatigue.

Three to five works looked at closely give more than twenty halls at a run. And one game at the end: let the child pick the painting they would take home and say why. "I just like it" does not count, at least one reason is required.
Three exercises after the museum
Do them the same day, while the picture still holds in the head.
- From memory. Draw the work that stayed with you without looking at a phone. Compare with a photograph afterwards and see what memory changed. Usually it changes proportion and colour, which makes a good conversation
- Two bands. Divide the sheet with a horizontal line in the same proportion as the landscape you remember. Fill the top and the bottom without drawing details. A composition exercise in its purest form
- Your own everyday scene. Draw what the family did at home that evening. Kasteyev painted many such subjects, and after the museum the child has seen how a grown painter handles one

The Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan sits in the Koktem-3 district, part of the Bostandyk district of Almaty. Check opening hours and ticket prices on the museum's own site before you set out: the schedule changes, and on weekends the halls fill with guided groups.
Two more things are worth finding out first: whether photography is allowed and whether you can bring a sketchbook. If sketching is permitted, take a pencil and a small pad, but agree in advance about drawing in the hall itself so it does not disturb other visitors.
