Kazakh landscapes in painting: Big Almaty Lake and the mountains of Almaty
Almaty is one of the few cities where the mountains are visible from almost any courtyard and a high-altitude lake is an hour and a half away. That changes what people want on their walls: most often they ask not for a generic "nice landscape" but for a specific place they have been to themselves. Below are the subjects commissioned most often at the studio, and what matters if you want your own place painted.
Big Almaty Lake
Big Almaty Lake sits at around 2,500 metres in the Bolshaya Almatinka gorge, some 25 kilometres from the city. The colour of the water shifts through the year from deep turquoise to dark blue, depending on the water level and how much glacial silt the meltwater carries in.
For painting this is both a gift and a difficulty. A gift, because turquoise against grey-ochre slopes is a ready-made contrast that needs no invention. A difficulty, because that colour is easy to oversweeten: a little more blue and the lake turns into a postcard. So the water is painted from its surroundings — from the colour of the rock and the sky at the same hour — rather than on its own. One of the works from this series is "Big Almaty Lake".
The Zailiysky Alatau
The snow-covered range is what you see from most streets in Almaty if you look south. Talgar Peak, Komsomol, the slopes above Medeu and Shymbulak are the most recognisable silhouettes, and those are the ones most often requested on canvas.
Mountains in painting hold together through air rather than detail: the further the ridge, the lighter and cooler it becomes and the less contrast it carries. Paint the distant peaks as sharply as the near slopes and the picture falls apart — the depth disappears. That is why in works such as "Left Talgar Peak" the far plane is deliberately subdued.
Sky and steppe
Beyond the city a different scale begins: a wide horizon, sparse clouds, long light towards evening. Steppe subjects are requested less often than mountains, but they work best of all in an interior — little detail and a great deal of air, so the painting neither argues with the room nor tires under a long look.
Seasons: when to paint your place
The same gorge looks entirely different through the year, and this is worth settling before the commission:
- spring — the greenest and most contrasting season, plenty of water in the rivers;
- summer — dense greenery and harsh midday light; better painted from morning or evening photographs;
- autumn — ochre and gold on the slopes, the warmest palette of the year;
- winter — minimum colour and maximum form; this version sits most calmly in a modern interior.
How to have your own place painted
People rarely ask for "mountains in general" — they ask for a particular view: the gorge they have visited since childhood, the outlook from a summer house, the site of a hike, the window of a parent's home. Such a commission needs your photographs: several frames of the same place, ideally at the hour you like it best, because morning and evening light produce completely different pictures.
