A painting as a gift: what to think about
A painting is one of the few gifts that is not eaten, does not go out of fashion and does not end up in the attic six months later. It is also easier to get wrong than almost anything else, because the gift hangs in plain sight every day. Below is what to consider in order to get it right, and how much time to allow.
When a painting is a good gift, and when it is not
A painting works when it has an occasion and an address: an anniversary, a housewarming, a parents' milestone, a birth, a wedding, the memory of a journey. It almost always lands when the subject is connected to the person — their place, their pet, their mountains.
It works badly in two cases: when you do not know the recipient well, and when they have no free wall. In both situations a smaller format does better — 30×40 or 40×50 will find a place in almost any home.
How to learn someone's taste without giving away the surprise
Look not at what a person says about painting, but at what they have surrounded themselves with:
- the colours in the home — warm or cool, calm or bright;
- what already hangs on the walls, and in what frames;
- where they travel and what they photograph;
- whether there is a pet — the most reliable subject there is;
- which places mean something to them.
Their own photographs say more about taste than any question could. If in doubt, a quiet landscape or water is hard to lose with: both suit almost any interior and impose no mood.
Personal beats beautiful
The most successful gifts are the ones that could not have been bought ready-made. A pet portrait from family photographs. The mountains seen from a parent's window. The place a couple met. The courtyard someone grew up in. Works like these become family objects and move house along with their people.

Timing: the main reason gifts go wrong
A commissioned painting takes one and a half to three weeks, a portrait two to three, and after that the oil needs time to dry. In practice that means ordering roughly a month before the date, not a week.
The busiest months are December, March and May — before New Year, International Women's Day and graduations the queue is longer than usual. If only a few days remain before the occasion, taking a finished work is more honest than putting everyone in an awkward position. Framing and handing it over
A frame is not obligatory, but with one the gift looks finished and survives moves better. Within Almaty I hand the work over in person and pack it for presentation; to other cities in Kazakhstan it goes by courier. If the painting is a surprise, say so in advance and we will arrange things so the recipient sees nothing before the day.

How far in advance should a painting be commissioned as a gift? About a month before the date: one and a half to three weeks of work plus drying and some margin for agreeing the subject. Before public holidays, earlier still.
What can I give if there is almost no time left? A finished work from stock — it can be collected the same day. A commissioned painting cannot be produced in three days, and I will not promise otherwise.
