Plein air in Almaty: five places to draw from life this autumn
Plein air in Almaty is easier in autumn than in summer: no heat, softer light, and the colour in the leaves shifts every week. Below are five places you can realistically reach on a day off, what to take with you, and what working from life actually trains.
Why autumn beats summer
Summer in the city leaves one option: go out at seven in the morning or not at all. By midday the light flattens, shadows shorten, and sitting in the sun becomes impossible.
Autumn is easier for three reasons:
- the sun sits lower, shadows run longer, and volume reads on the sheet by itself
- an hour outdoors is bearable even in the middle of the day
- colour in the leaves shifts visibly: between two weekends the same tree looks different
One drawback: it gets dark earlier. After five in the evening in October there is little light left, and that belongs in the plan.

Botanical Garden on Timiryazev. The closest spot to the studio and a convenient one for a first attempt: alleys, water, trees that fit whole onto a sheet. Check opening hours and the entry fee on the garden's own site before setting out, they have changed.
First President's Park. Plenty of space and plenty of air. What trains here is distance: the mountains behind the park give you the step people stumble over when they draw from photographs.
Kok-Tobe. The city from above, with haze and a horizon line. A hard task: too much information, and a beginner tries to draw all of it at once. Not for a first outing.
A street facing the mountains. In Almaty the mountains stand at the end of almost any street running uphill. No travel needed: step out to a corner and stand so the street runs away from you.
Your own courtyard. Fifteen minutes, no journey, and you can draw the same tree once a week all autumn. A series like that teaches more than one heroic expedition.
What to pack
The kit fits in a small bag:
- an A5 sketchbook on heavy paper, ideally with a hard cover
- a medium pencil and an eraser
- a watercolour box and a water brush, if you want colour
- a bottle of water, which doubles as painting water
- something to sit on, and a warmer layer than you think you need
An easel is not needed the first time. The lighter the bag, the better the odds of a second outing.
What plein air trains, and what it does not
It trains: speed, choosing what matters, tone under real light, distance and air. In thirty minutes outdoors you make more decisions than in two hours at home with a photograph.
It does not train: neatness, fine detail, long work on a single sheet. The light moves, hands get cold, and the sheet has to be finished earlier than you would like.
Hence the rule: plein air does not replace the studio, it continues it. Composition, tone and mixing colour are set indoors where nothing changes, and outdoors they get applied where everything does. How that kind of feedback works in a lesson is described in how a lesson is built.

How not to quit after the first try
Three things that turn a first plein air session into the last one.
Too large a subject. A panorama fits neither the sheet nor thirty minutes. Take one tree, one corner of a building, one bench.
Too long a warm-up. An hour spent choosing a spot eats all the light. Sit down, set thirty minutes, begin.
Showing it too early. A study from life almost always looks worse than the picture in your head, and it should be compared with your own previous study.
Where to learn before going outside
