Details before masses. The eye catches on eyelashes and petals, the hand follows the eye, and an hour later there is one worked-up corner on the canvas and emptiness around it. The cure is order: big shapes first, details last.
Colour straight from the tube. Tube green does not exist in nature - foliage always holds ochre, blue, grey. Until colour is mixed on the palette, the work reads like a poster.
Comparing yourself to someone's feed. Social media shows the result and hides the fact that it is the author's fortieth attempt. The only honest comparison is with your own previous piece - which is why the works get stacked up.
How long it takes to learn to paint from zero
The honest answer: a finished piece happens on day one, working independently comes much later, and the timeline differs for everyone.
What usually happens, stage by stage:
