Painting master classes in Almaty: tote bags, canvases, birthdays
A master class differs from a regular group lesson in one respect: it happens once and produces a finished result. Someone with no experience arrives, makes a thing in a single session and takes it home. Here is what the ArtMix studio in Almaty runs: children's birthday parties, sessions for adults, tote bag painting and painting on canvas.
What can be made in one session
Tote bag painting. The most popular format and the only one that runs regularly — you can come alone without gathering a group. A fabric bag is painted with acrylics: the design survives washing and the bag is genuinely usable. Teenagers and adults both come; no experience needed.
Painting on canvas. A small canvas in oils or acrylics in a single session. The subject is chosen in advance — usually something that can realistically be finished in the time: the sea, mountains, flowers, a simple still life.
A children's birthday party. The format most often booked as a whole event: children draw or paint tote bags, and each one leaves with their own work instead of a bag of sweets. Age, subject and length are matched to the particular group.
A session for adults. Colleagues, friends, a family occasion. Canvas is the usual choice here: an evening after which everyone has something of their own on the wall.
How it works
The order is the same as in a regular lesson, only compressed into one session:
- We look at the subject. We show what it will become and which steps it is built from.
- We lay it out. Composition on canvas or fabric — what goes where.
- We work in colour. With a demonstration at every stage: nobody is left alone with a blank canvas.
- We finish and take it away. The work goes home with you the same day.
Materials belong to the studio: paints, brushes, canvases or bags, palettes. There is nothing to bring; wear something simple, as the studio does not hand out aprons.
An honest caveat: a master class does not make an artist in one evening. It gives you a finished object and an understanding of the steps it is built from. If you want to continue afterwards, there are regular groups.
What it costs
The guide figure is from 7,000 ₸ per person. The exact sum depends on what is being made and how many people come: canvas costs more than a tote bag, and a larger group works out cheaper per head.
Format and price are agreed individually — not evasiveness, but the nature of the task. A birthday party for eight seven-year-olds and an evening for four adults working in oils are different sessions in time, materials and preparation, and a single figure for both would be untrue in both directions.
What the quote depends on:
- how many people;
- what is being made — tote bag, canvas, something else;
- age: a children's session runs differently and shorter;
- day and time — weekends are busier.
Tote bag master classes: when you can simply turn up
This strand runs regularly and needs no organising. It suits you if:
- you want to try the studio without committing to a course;
- you need a handmade gift — a painted bag reads exactly as one;
- two or three of you are coming and you are not assembling a group for a separate date.
Check dates on WhatsApp: the schedule of regular master classes changes and places are taken in advance.
A children's birthday at the studio
The same questions come up about this format, so here are the answers up front.
Children work under a teacher's guidance, each makes their own piece and takes it home. The subject is matched to the age: seven-year-olds and twelve-year-olds produce different things, and that is worth agreeing beforehand.
About food and decorations: a studio is a studio, not a party venue. We are responsible for the creative part; anything else is discussed separately. Saying in advance what we do not provide is more honest than sorting it out on the day.
Frequently asked questions
Is drawing experience needed? No. A master class is designed for people who have never drawn: there is a demonstration at every step.
Can I come on my own? To a tote bag master class, yes — it runs regularly. The other formats are arranged for a group.
How many people can I bring? It depends on the format and the date — send the number and the ages and we will say what fits.
What should we bring? Nothing. All materials belong to the studio. Wear something simple; there are no aprons.
Do we take the work straight away? A tote bag, yes. An oil canvas is better left to dry; we agree the timing on the day.
Do you run master classes off-site? That is discussed separately: we need to know the venue, the number of people and what is being made.
Can a master class be given as a gift? Yes, it is a common choice. Write to us and we will arrange it.
How to book
Write on WhatsApp: the occasion, how many people, their ages, and whether you would like a tote bag or a canvas. We will propose a format, quote a price and find a date. Contacts and the studio address at 69A Satpaev Street are on the Contacts page. If you would like to continue regularly afterwards, see the children's and teenage groups, or the adult strand in the Courses section.
